The Insurance Institution of Highway Safety (IIHS) has determined that side airbag (SAB) systems can significantly improve passenger safety, and automotive manufacturers are including these systems in an increasing number of their vehicles. However, upon deployment, SAB systems generate extreme forces that can easily shatter conventional thermoplastic trim materials, resulting in the generation of sharp fractures and dangerous, high-speed projectiles, especially at cold temperatures.
